There's some bad luck clouds over the Circus Ruska Festival. Our own boy, Matias Salmenaho broke his leg and therefore Cirque Aital can not do their whole show as it is planned. But still they will perform a shorter version of New Creation-show.
There's always something good in bad things. Our surprise-guest will be juggler from the top, Jay Gilligan. We will see some of his latest material at the same display.
So if you have ticket to Cirque Aital: New Creation, you will get Jay Gilligan with same price. How cool is that!!

A long way from home

It's finally happening for real! We met with Rafael and Blancaluz in Stockholm last winter. We told about our festival and they were really interested to come to Tampere with their upcoming show. Since their set is so big and heavy we decided it would be best if they drive to Tampere with their car and trailer.

After long planning Compagnie Morosof started their long journey from Barcelona to Tampere on friday. They picked up their set and technicians from France and now they are somewhere in the northern Germany. Tonight they'll drive to a ferry in Travemünde. By then they have driven apx. 2000 km. From Travemünde they will enjoy a relaxing voyage on Finnlines Europalink. After 27 hours and 1132 km they will arrive to Helsinki harbor where they'll meet us and change to car with good winter tires and continue the last 180 km. They will finally arrive to Tampere on wednesday around 11.00.

Just have to admire their willpower! Circus people are so cool!

Race Horse Company will perform next Saturday at Tampere for the very first time with their show, Petit mal.

Circus Ruska Festival proudly presents The Irrationals!!!

The Irrationals is a wild bunch of well marinated specialists whose unorthodox caravan brings you a good deal of hip-hop flavored rhythm music moving from kebabrock to rautalanka, from foxtrot to bashing garage sounds with a self-made attitude all easy to dance to.

Started as a hip hop duo by Tyko Haapala and Totte Rautiainen, the band found its final form a couple years ago when the other guys joined in, all highly respected in the Finnish field of jazz, blues, rock and hip-hop.

Released on 7th September 2011, the bands debut album "Hold Your Horses" climbed all the way to the 14th position on the official Finnish album chart and was highly acclaimed among the national music press.

A music video for the second single "My Baby" was shot by Pablo Films. The video is a tribute to all the bass players in the Galaxy and on it you can find 32 bassists from Finland.

Antti Hynninen, also known as a Circus Ruska's composer, plays at The Irrationals. You can see him and rest of the band alive at Circus Ruska Festival evening club on Saturday 28th of Jan.

Sirkus Aikamoinen will perform their newest show Aisti at Circus Ruska Festival.
Aisti (Eng."sense") tells a story about the shades of a human mind. The show explores the nuances in objects, persons or movements with small stories.

Pat Clarrison and his 4 Hotdogs, is an innovative and original themed comedy act with dogs.

The dogs are encouraged to have the freedom to enjoy their part of performing,which can be clearly seen on stage.

All the dogs have been rescued from Dogs-Homes around France, and have been complimented by various authorities around Europe for their high-standard of living.

The act itself is adaptable to work in all situations,and has appeared in many different venues around the globe since begining in 2005

Esityksen kantavana teemana on parisuhde. Esityksen edetessä haluamme vastata seuraaviin kysymyksiin komedian keinon: Miten 50 kg painava kiukkuinen nainen peittoaa 100 kg painavan lempeän miehen? Miten parisuhde toimii näiden kahden erikokoisen henkilön kohdatessa? Kumpi suhteessa johtaa ja kumpi tulee perässä? Miten parisuhde kahden ihmisen välillä rakentuu?

Näiden kysymysten ratkaisemiseen käytämme erilaisia sirkustekniikoita, kuten pariakrobatiaa, jalkajongleerausta ja jongleerausta. Erityisesti pariakrobatiassa olemme koko ajan näiden kysymysten äärellä. Pariakrobatiassa joudumme luottamaan toiseen ja hänen kykyynsä ottaa kiinni, jos putoamme. Pariakrobatiassa joko toinen johtaa ja vie sirkustemppuja eteenpäin vai tekevätkö molemmat töitä yhdessä yhteisen päämäärän saavuttamiseksi.

Näistä asioistahan on myös parisuhteessa kysymys. Meidän on pakko luottaa ja uskoa toiseen ihmiseen vai onko? Mitä tapahtuu jos luottamus loppuu ja kiista alkaa. Kumpi silloin voittaa parisuhteessa, pieni kiukkuine nainen vai iso lempeä mies. Elämme yhteiskunnassa, jossa erot ovat muotia ja paria vaihdetaan heti kun pienikin ongelma ilmenee. Nyky-yhteiskunnassa ei jakseta taistella hyvän puolesta vaan luovutetaan, vaihdetaan ja toivotaan, että parempi elämä löytyy nurkan takaa.

Pariakrobatia on kuin parisuhde. Siinä joutuu luottamaan toiseen ja keskustelemaan siitä kumpi on oikeassa ja kumpi väärässä. Tämän takia pariakrobatia on oiva väline kommentoimaan parisuhdetta, pilke
silmäkulmassa.

Jussi Paradise is a veteran in finnish sideshow-scene. He has done over 200 shows in 15 countries in 3 continents.
He got to know sideshow culture better in 2001, when he joined legendary finnish sideshowgroup Circus Mundus Absurdus. After CMA was buried in 2007, he has been performing mostly with his groups SnakeOil and The Saviours.
Nowdays he can share his interest in sideshow with his wife Lucky Hell.

Show is called Undermän and it's about three circusartists who have lost their partners, careers and life goals meet and decide to create something new. From being the anonymous persons supporting, lifting and balancing their partners they now take the opportunity to change things around. This results in a show about catching opportunities, community and creativity. A show filled with fearless acrobatic musicians, a circus performer’s confessions, rubik’s cube, kettlebell choreographies and hidden talents. ”Undermän” is a swedish wordplay meaning both ”wonder men” and ”hand to hand porters”

One of the Balenko's musicians, Helmut, is familiar from earliers Festivals. He has been performing in Tampere with Circus Ruska's own boy Matias .
This is how they describe themselves:

The four musicians of BALENKO (accordeon, guitar, stand-up bass, drums) bring together there skills to play any kind of jiggling or twirling music in the sole purpose of
seeing their audiences dancing. Based on the « french musette » tradition (waltzes, paso-dobles, tango, cha-cha's, boleros, polkas...) BALENKO's repertoire is also mixed
with the 70's revival of regional dances of around the atlantic country's (celtic, acadian, cajun...) and rock 'n roll!

From the streets of Sin City come a team of performers guaranteed to shock and amaze. Andrew S., Kelvikta the Blade and Jenn O. Cide bring classic carnival entertainment screaming into the 21st Century. Witness ancient and deadly feats of skill along with jaw dropping "never before seen" original stunts.

World Class sword swallowing, fire performance, belly dancing and Mind Over Body demonstrations are just the beginning. What other sideshow performers would consider a grand finale is only a warm up for these innovative and fearless performance artists.

PAIN SOLUTION

Pain Solution was founded in 1993 in the Old parts of Oslo
called Gamlebyen, by the initiative of HÅVVE FJELL.
He has ever since been the leader of this group.

PS have now been active for many years and has therefore
achieved an international reputation and position as one
of the best in this genre. Sideshow, freakshow, circus,
performance, theatre and live art are conceptions that is
an accurate description of the variety and specter that PS
has been involved in.

At the moment sideshow is the main topic.

In 1996 PS started working with Aurin Theatre and in -99 PS
got their first contribution from Norsk Kulturråd and
produced the performance/show “The Key to Hell”. In 2001 PS
again got contribution from Norsk Kulturråd for the
production of a newcircus performance “Ringen”.
The cooperation with Haugesund Theatre and Circus Xanti
resulted in Norway’s first touring newcircus production.
A milestone he was rightfully proud of. Unfortunately the
production went under budged and PS as a group dispersed.
Stubborn as he is Håvve Fjell refused to give up
today he still pay part payment on the dept he got during
this period) and has kept alive his life work to this day
despite all hardship.

Reeducation was never an alternative and other occupations
became a distraction which inhibited the development of
Pain Solution.

I 2002 body suspension became available to the common
people though the founding of WINGS of DESIRE. WoD is run
in cooperation with PINPOINT PIERCING and yearly presents
OSLO SUSCON which summons enthusiast from all over the
world. WoD offers lectures and suspension workshops in
addition to suspension days where the needy get to hang
from hooks.

In 2003 the book “Ten years of pain” was published to mark
the first ten years of PS. Helene Fjell has been
ocumenting PS activities almost since the start and has
more than 90 photos to show for.

In it 13’Th year PS started The Fakir Academy.
For nearly 5 years PS had been a solo project but in
January 2007 PS The Fakir Academy was founded. The school
project came in to being as a result of coincidences.
In a time marked by little artistic progress but with some
commercial success, the thought of taking in some new
actors matured. One of the students already had his own
show SCENESKREKK together with a partner. He had regularly
been under the watchful eye of Håvve Fjell and a permanent
part of the WoD team.

Another one sought out suspensions and found it to be an
attractive activity. She became absorbed in finding out
more after her first flight and worked her way up the
ladder to gain her place as one of WoD permanent members.
She was ready for new challenges and was by then already
under the guidance of Fjell.

The third person came through the Child Protection Services
and was the actual triggering factor. When Fjell was asked
to advise in granting this boy his only wish to become a
fakir the seed to found a school was laid. After half year
probation he was accepted and the idea to this production
took shape. And they could start training for real.
The other two was invited to participate in the production
and enthusiastically they accepted.

Now with 3 students Fjell could appoint himself as
The Headmaster and point out a new direction for PS.
Through a 3 years education the schools student is to
acquire all of the rules of the fakir art and be given the
competence they need for further employment in PS.

The contract is signed in blood.
The school is partly financed by the Child Protection
Service, but mostly by own income through shows and
idealism

Circus meets Burlesque club by Circus Ruska is here again, and now better than ever! You don't want to miss this party! First day of Circus Ruska Festival was great and lot's of people came to see Jakobin Sirkus:ZirkoPazziRagazzi. Our headline-show, Jani Nuutinen's: Une cirque plus juste, was sold out.
Evening club had very warm athmosphere. It was so nice to see Circus Ruska's Teos1 for the first time in 5 years. And i think audience would like to see it much more often in future.
Auteur Jazz brought me in to jazzworld and I loved it! Band played super well and music was awesome! We will hear so much about these guys!

Tricking (martial arts tricking) is the informal name of a relatively new underground alternative sport movement, combining martial arts, gymnastics, and other activities to create an "aesthetic blend of flips, kicks, and twists."[1] Tricking incorporates a variety of moves from different arts such as flips from gymnastics, 540 kick from Taekwondo, butterfly twist from Wushu and double leg from Capoeira. Tricking is recognizable by its flashy kicks, complex flips and twists, and its highly stylized movements which separate it from other arts. This is something that you might overhear if you walked in on Patrik and Wes while they are training. Having both been training juggling technique for over 12 years and holding world records solo and together you can tell they take their juggling seriously.

Both Patrik and Wes train and study at Dans och Cirkushogskolan. The contemporary circus school in Stockholm Sweden. Both sharing an intense desire to make something good and interesting with juggling they have been working hard since they met about a year ago to do that.

Loved by audiences around the world their show mixes new age juggling, extreme techniques, dance, puzzles, backwards ideas, backflips, smashed assumptions and higher 5's!

Legendary Juggling Battle

Circus Ruska Festival has been hosting legendary Juggling Battle since 2005. Idea is that jugglers compete against each others same way as in breakdance.
First round is with one club and everybody has one minute time to show everything they can do, without dropping.
Second round is with two clubs etc..
Audience decides who is the best in every round and normally in the final, there has been 2-4 competitors and jugglers has showed some crazy tricks.
Can't wait to see who will be winner this time. It won't be easy to win. There will be lot's of supergood jugglers in the house that night!

Introducing Brightboy, in program 16.1.2010 at Mega Circus Carnival Club

Since the very beginning, from the early demo-tapes to this date, Brightboy has been the evil twin, that never asks before committing, and do things fast...Really fast!
The band was formed in 2004, found a shape in early 2005 and since then has been moving forward like a freight train.
Brightboy got signed to Helsinki Music Company at the end of 2005 and released their first single "1989" early 2006.
First album "Love For The Streets" was released in June 2006, followed by a choir of critical praises, heavy radio- and TV-rotation for the 'hit' single "Vanity Fair" and loads of publicity.
All's good, right? Hell no! Brightboy has always been a band, that's essence is grounded on evolution. The band noticed a lot of meaningful details and entities on the simple, clean and pumping disco-"rock" sound of the first album that they wanted to do a bit differently. Once again with just a short phase of time passed, Brightboy started committing before asking anyone's permission. Their will came alive in October 2007 as Brightboy released their second, "in the shadow of trance formers". This time they added more shades and more colour to create vast contrasts and a larger scale of emotions to their music. ITSOTF contains a consept-story of a bright boy, a decadent figure of our time, trying to reach success and then trying to cope with it. The sound evolved to something more organic and more rough, revealing the balls in Brightboy. But one thing remained, and that is great Brightboy songs, and once again, the critics dropped to their knees before the album, radio and TV rotate hard, again lots of publicity, great shows all around Finland and more and more people following band's every move.
All's good, right? Still not, we have to keep moving on. And what may come next, we never know. Just before the release of ITSOTF, Brightboy's long-term bass player Henri Lidsle left the band and was replaced by the same guy who signed the band to HMC, Jesse Valo. Today Brightboy is without a question one of the hottest live acts in Finland and with a new, ever so strong line-up, the past has been just a beginning, a scratch on the surface of something that's bound to rise up 'til the skyline!

And they have some special suprises in line-up for the Circus Ruska Festival audience!

Whew! What a Festival!

The Festival was a success! We expected around 1500 people to come to the shows, but ended up with 2000 people! Artists were amazing- Big Big Thank You for them!

Here's a clip from Koulutuskeskus Salpaus show Anna Pala(a) and also an interview of one of the young artists there. The videoclip is published in one papers web version. In the end of the video you can see how the legendary duo The Buldig Brothers got on stage in our Circus Carnival Club...

Today was a set-building-day in Tullikamari. It's starting to look like real circus in there. Round manege and rising seats are ready for the first rehersals in the morning. The first show starts at 18.00.

While the others were busy building I was setting up a festival-office in the backstage. And had to learn how to use Mac-computer..hahaa. It was, well, hmm, time consuming thing.

This evening Koulutuskeskus Salpaus performed their show for the circus-kids in Sorin Sirkus and I went to see it also. The show was good! My favorites were the hola-hoop-girl and another girl who did a tightwire number with tango music. Wow!

Tomorrow our day starts at 8 with a meeting and then we run the day. Klubi will have a new look with some circuslights and so on. So I guess I should get some shut-eye soon...

Hard to believe it, but here we are again. One week before the Circus Ruska Festival. For the fifth time! Where did the years go...

We had our press this week and it went okay: couple of newspapers and radios showed up! And one journalist remembered Petteri's words from two years ago, something about Tampere becoming the circuscapital of Finland. She was asking when exactlty it's going to take place and Petteri pushed the timelimit 'til 2013, was it? ;)

Anyway. Last year some shows were sold out. So book your tickets now! It is so easy: just send an e-mail to info@circusruska.com.

What is special about this year. Hmm. That there will be more shows than last year, the guys are going to build a (round) manege in Tullikamari, there will be two circusclubs (on Friday an art-party and on Saturday party-party). And of course, we have a lovely and a little bit crazy lady hosting the festival. Also some surprises coming... You'll see, you'll see..

Well, yours truly is spending more and more time in front of the computer. Grant applications, phonecalls to Neatherlands, fooling around in Facebook...getting to sofa to watch Dr.Phil (not that I was addicted, but to have a break from my terrible duties) adn off again. It was abig mistake of my dad to buy me the digibox.

And trying, trying hard to get out every now and then to do some sports. And have a few beers once and a while. Maybe a bit less of that nowadays.

So, I got the first contacts (still a secret) of 2 performers that will be present in January. I´ll contact them soon. Also, I helped Kitte out for 2 magnificient acts (=read bands) for our Club evening on festival weekend. I just have my fingers crossed that everything will go well with their scedules.

The most longlife contemporary circus festival in Finland, Circus Ruska Festival, is arranged already 5th time 23.-24.1.2009. The festival has grown every year and it is estimated to do so during this year as well, when Tullikamari cultural centre will transform into a circus arena for a weekend.

Year 2009 Circus Ruska Festival will combine the new circus with old tradition, also in the set up: the main venue is round and makes it possible to enjoy performances with full view to the stage from every seat.

The structure of the festival events is the same and there will be more performances than ever. Circus Ruska recommends the festival pass for visitors to pay less and see more. There are 2 evening clubs. On Friday Klubi is an open stage for everyone and on Saturday the famous Carnival Club will get the house on fire by presenting great music and the world famous juggling battle. During the weekend there is the possibility to get a total circus boost with free lectures and exhibitions, also while having a coffee or lunch at Klubi.

The base of the programme is to give a variety of shows for all age groups in wide perspective. The program is a secret until the end of November, but Circus Ruska reveals one long waited performer in advance: He is an award winning Finnish Circo Aereo performer Jani Nuutinen from France. The acknowledged professional Nuutinen brings his triumphant solo act ”Un cirque tout juste” to Tampere for the first time. This sympathetic performance has been a big success in France and made Circus Ruska crew weep for heartfelt and pro-found.

Festival has now a new look. Circus Ruska festival logo is designed by graphic designer Kari Jokinen and logo mirrors old circus tradition spiced up with contemporary mood. With the new look Circus Ruska Festival invites all the new and old circus lovers to be passionate again about high quality circus acts and carnival bustle on 5th Circus Ruska festival.

Every now and then you have to do some real work to afford circus work... Here I am in Lyon with Tero Saarinen Company recovering from premiere party. I'm sure some day we will be here and around the Europe in prestigious venues also with Circus Ruska.
Of course I'm constantly working for Circus Ruska as well. Just sent some plans for 'Nuori Kulttuuri' youth circus festival. The festival is pretty much ready and just waiting for the guests on 16th-18th of October. After surviving the youngsters it will be full steam towards 5th Circus Ruska Festival in January. For that I already did some thinking (not actually anything) for some grant applications.
I hope this is OK for my blog duty. Not much to report this week. Maybe someone from the Tampere office could continue as I know things are bubbling there and few surprises for January are already set.

It was a amazing party on Saturday in Klubi thanks to Kitte from Circus Ruska and the Burleski girls from helsinki. It was so nice to see how many people came dressed as Burleski costumes. It was also nice to see how well circus and burleski works together.

Circus Ruska is also involved in Lahti at the moment. One of our member is creating circus koregrafs to the play Sleeping Beauty. Premiere is 15th of oktober in Lahti city theatre. Artists who are performing in the play are coming from circus shool in Lahti, they are third year students. In the play you will see many different circus disiplines.

We had Circus meets Burlesque club last Saturday and it was a huge succes. Burlesque-party were organized together with Hulapirates from Helsinki.

If someone already forgot, the Burlesque night is on Saturday 13th at Klubi (Tampere) with all dazzling performers.

The Buldig Brothers did 'The Show' In two acts for 14-16 old teenagers yesterday. It was outside gig and it was raining all day. The stage was covered, no problem with that, but to gather audience from under trees to in front of the stage was a bit of a challenge. As you may know teenagers are tough crowd... But we nailed it! (It was actually much more tough for Jukka Grönfors with his handstand act who can not reply to the comments.)
For us it is actually fun to perform for teenagers and let them participate to the performance. In my point of view above all performing arts circus is all about interaction.
This BB gig was definitely different from most of our gigs. We had to pay so much attention to the audience that Pasi lost his count in passing. Yours truly was easily able to do two things at the same time but hey, that's me.
Signed some autographs to the arms of most true fans (all girls - we still got it) and walked out in the rain with little bit more pride in us.

Hello

Greetings from Soly Circo Festival from Germany. I was visiting in the festivl last week. To chek out what is the level in the circus at the moment. Like in every festival there was something nice to see and something not so nice.

There was three artist from Finland. And they did well. Kimmo Hietanen who is doing a slackt rope took third place. And Pinja Schönberg took a price most innovative act.

I also saw some other nice acts maybe we will see some of them in Circus Ruska Festival 2009.
